INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARD

  • WINNER: Myrtle Allen
  • Highly commended: Tom MacMillan, Food Ethics Council
The Food Ethics Council has been working since 1998, often behind the scenes but often with significant results, to change the way public food policy is formulated. A completely independent organisation, the FEC has fearlessly fought against the alliance between government and the corporate food industry.
  • Highly commended: Jim Budd, www.investdrinks.org
Over the past 15 years, the wine and whisky fields have been plagued by fraudulent investment schemes, which have cost individuals between £150 million and £200 million. Jim Budd, working via his editorship of ‘Circle Update’ (the journal of the Circle of Wine Writers) and via his self-funded, website, has tirelessly tracked the companies and individuals involved, as well as covering ancillary fraud-related business failures in the wine and spirits area and other fraudulent investment schemes offered by those who have previously traded in wine and spirit investments.
