The old fashioned

Created by bartender Martin Cuneo in honour of Colonel James E. Pepper at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky in 1881, it’s now evolved into two versions – the new and the old. The Pendennis Club obviously opts for the latter and it’s a totally different drink compared to the modern version my palate was used to.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Glenfiddich 15 Year Old
  • 1 brown sugar cube
  • 4 dashes of aromatic bitters
  • 4 - 6 ice cubes
  • Orange peel

Instructions

  1. 1
Take a sugar cube and crush it in the glass
  2. 2
Add the Glenfiddich and aromatic bitters into a mixing glass over ice and stir well
  3. 3
Strain over large cube of ice into an old fashioned glass
  4. 4
Zest the oils of two large pieces of orange peel into the glass
  5. 5
Add a slice of the orange peel to the glass as a garnish.
