Glenfiddich 1937 Rare Collection Fetches £68,500 at Auction

Things don’t always go as they should. Sometimes they go better.

That’s exactly what happened to cask 843, better known nowadays as our Rare Collection 1937. Nurtured by ten of the finest warehousemen and under the specialist care of generations of Malt Masters, this precious expression spent 64 years in the cask, after which the angels left only 61 bottles. Its strength, from decades of evaporation, should have been depleted. But it was not. Instead it had an incredible, innate and unrepeatable quality and has since been deemed one of the finest and oldest whiskies in the world.

Every now and then when one of these exquisitely rare bottles comes around, the highly unusual and elegant expression attracts attention from collectors all over the world. With a palate of many unfolding layers, a huge aroma, a rich colour and of course, its patiently masterful finish, it’s not hard to imagine why.

One such event occurred earlier this month, when a bottle of our Glenfiddich Rare Collection 1937 sold to a bidder in the Far East for a record-breaking £68,500. In the words of Martin Green, Bonhams Whisky specialist, "The record price reflects the exceptional rarity of the Glenfiddich Rare Collection 1937 and its great appeal to collectors everywhere."

It seems our tradition of doing things differently makes for exquisite results.

As the Maverick whisky makers of Dufftown, we’ve spent well over a century doing what we love. Rare skills, specialist knowledge and some of the oldest wisdom in the world of whisky have been passed down through the generations by our master makers; all of which lives on at the distillery and informs everything we do.

It follows then, that over the years we’ve grown quite the collection of aged and exclusive single malt Scotch whiskies. From the incredibly rare and complex 50 Year Old, to our Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve – there’s plenty more of the Glenfiddich range to discover.
