Fanny Arnesen Profile

Fanny Arnesen

Sweden

Fanny Arnesen (b. 1996) is a Swedish artist currently based in Glasgow. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a BA(Hons) in Painting and Printmaking in 2020. Her practice stems from an exploration of the natural landscape and the emotion it evokes, with a primary focus on trees. Through oil painting with a predominantly darker colour palette, she tries to emphasise the beauty that lies within the eerie aspects of the forest.

“My practice is based upon an exploration of the natural landscape and the emotion it evokes, with a focus on trees. I draw inspiration from folklore, notions of the sublime and traditional landscape painting. Oil paint is my medium of choice, as the slow drying pace allows me to go back to the landscapes that I love and explore the intricate patterns and delicate details of what I originally experienced.

I perceive the forest as a surreal place, as a breeding ground for something magical and powerful. Through my paintings I delve into themes such as loneliness and belonging, sometimes by letting an unexpected entity take full dominion of the landscape. I aim to blur the line between fantasy and reality, and to highlight the mystical and eerie qualities of the landscapes.”
